Welsh Cakes were traditionally made by the lady of the household as a treat to serve at afternoon tea, and were also given to children with their school lunches. At one time they would be eaten regularly in farmhouses and cottages the length and breadth of Wales, and became a mainstay of the miner's lunch box.
They have gone by a few different names since their invention including “cage bach” or " pice ar y mâen" (cake on a stone) and they are also known as "Griddle Cakes", "Welsh Tea Cakes" and "Welsh Miner Cakes". The local names given to the cakes were usually derived from the Welsh name for the bakestone, and these included tishan ar y mân and tishen lechwan. They varied in size from small, round cakes to a single cake as big as the bakestone itself.
Welsh cakes are also traditionally made for celebrations and special occasions so this bar makes the perfect gift for that Welsh friend who left this beautiful land of our fathers - although we'd heartily recommend an extra bar just to treat yourself!
